Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1)Queer romantic comedy I Hate New Years is out on VOD today. The film features a number of LGBTQ characters, including out trans actress Candis Cayne as a psychic. Watch the trailer below and join the cast and crew for a Twitter watch party on Dec. 5. In other film release news, lesbian period drama Ammonite is out on VOD today. Catch the film here! In more film release news, out actress Aubrey Plaza stars in Black Bear, out today in limited theaters and on demand. Plaza plays a mysterious and manipulative house guest to a couple in a remote cabin. Watch the trailer here!
2) The trailer for out director and producer Ryan Murphy’s newest film The Prom has been released. Catch the trailer below and watch the star-studded movie when it’s released on Netflix, December 11! In other film trailer news, Magnolia Pictures has released the trailer for French film Two of Us (Deux), which you can watch here. The film is about an elderly lesbian couple who have been secret lovers for decades. Available everywhere Feb. 5, Two of Us is also France’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. In more film trailer news, the trailer for out actress Jodie Foster’s new movie The Mauritanian has been released. Due in theaters February 19, the film features Foster as a no-nonsense lawyer defending a Guantanamo Bay inmate who may or may not be innocent. Watch the trailer here.
3) The trailer for Behind the Try: A Try Guys Documentary has been released. The doc follows the experiences of the four members of The Try Guys, including out creator Eugene Lee Yang. Watch the trailer below! In other documentary news, the trailer for Homeschool Musical: Class of 2020 is out now. The HBO Max documentary focuses on the struggles and triumphs of seven theatre kids of the class of 2020, including a few gay and trans teens, as they face school musical cancellations in the wake of the global pandemic. 4) In holiday film trailer news, the trailer for Lifetime’s gay holiday rom-com The Christmas Setup has been released. The film stars real-life husbands Blake Lee and Ben Lewis as a gay couple who are setup to date by a matchmaker mom played by Fran Drescher. Watch the trailer below catch the premiere on Saturday, Dec. 12 on Lifetime. In other holiday film news, the trailer for holiday comedy The Christmas Lottery is out now. The film follows one family who wins the lottery, but misplaces the winning ticket, causing chaos and mayhem. One of the daughters in the family is queer and is shown with her girlfriend. 5) In other film news, out musician and actor Carrie Brownstein has announced she will be writing and directing a new music biopic based on the Seattle band Heart. In other film development news, out director Tina Mabry is set to direct a film adaptation of out writer Edward Kelsey Moore’s debut novel The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat. With a script adaptation written by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the story revolves around the friendship of three Black women who live in a small Indiana town. In more film news, out actress Aubrey Plaza is set to star opposite Jason Statham in an untitled Guy Ritchie thriller.
6) In more film-related news,
the Transgender Film Center (TFC), a new non-profit organization established to support transgender filmmakers with resources and opportunities for their projects, has announced its first initiative: The Transgender Film Center’s Trailblazer Grant. The grant will provide start-up and completion funds to qualifying narrative or documentary projects that are written, directed, or produced by transgender creators. 7) In other film-related news, queer film festival Frameline has announced the re-launch of their Frameline Voices program. Voices is a curated program of short films that represent the varioues experiences of LGBTQ people and our community. The program aims to foster career advancement for queer, trans and gender non-binary creators through the exhibition of their work beyond the film festival, while expanding overall mainstream media representation of LGBTQ people by telling their stories. 8)The trailer for the first of two special holiday episodes of Euphoria has been released. The episode titled “Part 1: Rue” picks up right where the first season ended, with Rue (Zendaya) relapsing after her girlfriend Jules (out trans actress Hunter Schafer) leaves her after their school dance. In more TV trailer news, a new trailer for the Doctor Who special titled “Revolution of the Daleks” has been released. 9) In other TV news, Amazon has renewed sci-fi series The Expanse for a sixth and final season. The show’s fifth season will premiere on December 16th with the first three episodes dropping on the streamer at once; watch the trailer below. In other TV news, the full trailer for the third season of American Gods is out now. Out trans actress Dominique Jackson can be seen in the new trailer, which you can watch here. The show returns to Starz on Jan. 10.
10) In other TV news, out actress and comedian Lilly Singh’s late night talk show, A Little Late with Lilly Singh, will return for its second season in January 2021. The show will have a new showrunner and will move from a traditional studio stage to a house in Los Angeles. Catch the premiere at 1:35am EST on Monday, January 11, 2021, and watch Singh present the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Magazine Article to Raquel Willis at the most recent (virtual) GLAAD Media Awards below. In TV development news, NBC is developing a scripted drama Finding Forrester based on the 2000 Sean Connery theatrical film of the same name. The NBC version, set for 2021, will explore the unique bond between two gifted Black writers: a homeless 16-year-old orphan who leverages his basketball skills to hustle his way into an ultra-competitive elite boarding school, and a reclusive lesbian author whose career was ruined by a public scandal.

Tampon Rock, a new queer musical comedy podcast, premiered its first two episodes this week on iHeartRadio and wherever podcasts are heard. The podcast follows the two lead lesbian characters, Deja and Chloe, through the peaks and downfalls of love within the Oakland, CA dating scene. Listen to the podcast here!In more entertainment news, DC Comics writer Ivan Cohen has revealed the first non-binary member of the Flash family: Kid Quick. The non-binary teen will be included in an upcoming holiday special comic DC’s Very Merry Multiverse, which will feature gender-swapped versions of traditional superheroes from multiple DC universes. Kid Quick can first be seen in the new comic on December 9, and then will join DC Future State in early 2021. In other entertainment news, a release date and cover for the DC YA graphic novel I Am Not Starfire has been released. Written by Mariko Tamaki and drawn by Yoshi Yoshitani, the graphic novel follows queer goth Mandy, daughter of the famous Starfire, as she navigates dealing with her mother’s fame, the challenges of high school, and a blossoming relationship with her friend Claire. 15) In digital TV, out actor Johnny Sibilly is set to host Logo TV’s Logo Live digital series every Tuesday and Thursday. The show will be a live rundown of the day's trending stories with celebrity guest interviews on Logo’s Instagram. Watch the announcement video below! In more digital content news, a number of famous drag queens will be hosting a virtual drag revue called New Year’s Queens: Goodbye 2020! on Dec. 31. The digital event will be hosted by Alaska, Bob the Drag Queen, Katya, Miz Cracker, Peppermint, and Trixie Mattel, with performances from BenDeLaCreme, the Boulet Brothers, Divina De Campo, Ginger Minj, Jinkx Monsoon, Jujubee, Manila Luzon, BeBe Zahara Benet, Sharon Needles, and Trinity the Tuck.
